Hello Zenphoto, Goodbye Gallery2

After less than two years of using Gallery 2, I opted for change and have migrated my online photo gallery to Zenphoto. While powerful and feature-rich, Gallery became too cumbersome to maintain. Zenphoto, however, is easy to install, use and maintain. It looks and feels refreshingly streamlined. Whenever I work on or look at my galleries, I’m more likely to sigh with relief and (more) satisfaction, rather than roar and clench my fists.

I’ll be redirecting gallery.iwaruna.com to zenphoto.iwaruna.com in the next day or three. If you have bookmarked pages in the former, you should recheck and update to their location on the new server. Subscription feed links have also changed; the main feed which grabs recent photos from all albums is now http://zenphoto.iwaruna.com/rss.php. I’ll also eventually add back the sidebar thumbnail here (prolly via Zenshow or ZENpressed).

Mostly for my reference, but here are some “in progress” or “needs fixing” issues with Zenphoto —i.e., when using version 1.1.3 with the Default theme. Some are already known by the Zenphoto developer community. Overall they are minor and don’t adversely affect my usage.

  • Clicking an image shouldn’t always download it.
  • XHTML and CSS validation errors. Former might be due to invalid markup in both theme and core files.
  • Internationalization (and localization) support.
  • Random thumbprint for albums.
  • More ease in moving, renaming and copying images and albums.

    Hello there!

I too find zenphoto very interesting and well designed, but am currently a gallery user. Would you be able to tell me how to move all my photos across to zenphoto without having to reupload them all?

Yoram, when I migrated I had to reupload them, alas. I uploaded the files and folders via ftp, but had to re-enter all of the titles and descriptions. Check out the Zenphoto forums to see if there might be a faster/easier solution. (There wasn’t one, other than ftp and the web UI, AFAICT, when I had posted this in January.)

Thanks for the followup comment. You’re the first hit on google for “migrate gallery zenphoto” that actually mentions migration in the link description.

I did the same thing but couldn’t do it manually. So I wrote the migrator. Check it out here: http://apps.ouwu.com/confluence/display/pb/Gallery2+to+ZenPhoto+Migrator

Travis, what an excellent tool for anyone considering the move from Gallery2 to Zenphoto! I haven’t tried it out yet, since I no longer have a Gallery2 installation, but thanks a bunch for creating this migrator. 🙂

Old post, yes, but here’s some new information for the search bots. With Zenphoto 1.2, all you need to do is copy your albums from the gallery2 data folder into the zenphoto albums folder. It does everything else automatically. Note, you’ll probably have to rename the albums, and do some rearranging, depending on how much extra stuff you had in your gallery2 install.
